The Road Out Of Eden Analysis

Mystery, insecurities, and the feeling of loneliness. These two short stories include the two points of loss of identity and loss of innocence, with the slight combination of the three traits listed above, all five examples are consistent throughout these two short stories. Loss of innocence and mental alienation, the feeling of being alone in the short story “The Road out of Eden”, is how both examples come together to form the theme alienation. They’re able to tell us how the main character Sam felt after shooting the bully, he felt as if he was alone and the only way he could’ve gotten out to people was by death by frustration. Loss of identity in the short story “They’re Not Your Husband”, tells us about a man that has a low self-esteem about himself, when he visits his wife at work, and notices all the men mocking her every move and appearance. However, with his insecurity growing at every word that is sputtering out of the grown mens mouths, he feels as if he was to change his wife’s appearance, this would empower him as a person, and as a hopeful “breadwinner” in the family. The role that each protagonist in the two short stories that we discussed share the theme alienation, in some way, each character displays either loss of innocence or loss of identity.
