Loneliness In Shaka Senghor's 'Writing My Wrongs'

Loneliness is the true evil that causes a profound amount of pain within someone, driving them into the worst imaginable fate: a life of violence. In Shaka Senghor's memoir, Writing My Wrongs (2016), Jay’s life tumbles down into darkness. From when his mom disconnected herself from his life to murdering an innocent man, Jay felt a sense of loneliness throughout many periods of his life. Although his father had always been by his side, Jay felt detached from his father’s new life with his new wife and children. His parents absence in Jay’s future molded his thoughts into wrath-driven actions. The state of loneliness and neglect corrupted Jay from within, and lead him to act upon his thoughts, which were destructive. Senghor utilized rhetorical devices such as repetition and pathos in order to emphasize Jay’s solitude.

He had a brief encounter with his mother and father, but they left quite quickly. On page 137, we see Jay’s stream of consciousness and how lonely he feels; “No one hugged me, no one told me everything would be okay, no one explained to me that cars weren’t galloping chariots of death, driven by the grim reaper himself” (137). In this paragraph, Senghor used repetition to emphasize Jay’s state of loneliness and how he was left to answer his own concerns. In the sentence of “galloping chariots of death…” (137), Jay is being dramatic by associating a basic understanding with a dark image. He’s been living in constant fear after the incident, carrying a gun everywhere he goes, in case of “emergencies.” The chariot of death symbolizes the car and the grim reaper represents Jay’s ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend. Also, it can be implied that Jay was disappointed that the gunshot didn’t drive him closer to death since he didn’t seem as if he could live being

Many interesting points and ideas are discussed in Flannery O’Connor’s essay “The Element of Suspense in ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’”. These ideas are not only concurrent with O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, but they can also be broadened and applied to all aspects of literature. O’Connor’s primary theory; one that I believe is prevalent not only in writing, but in everyday life, states that violence is the only thing capable of bringing a person back to reality, it is the only thing that can strip away somebodies personality, and leave behind only their basic and primal instincts; it leaves behind their true essence. O’Connor goes on to explain that “the man in the violent situation reveals those qualities least dispensable…

Evil is an intrinsically thought-provoking way in which anguish is brought to all the people involved or affected by the despicable act. For instance, a murderer may feel guilt or despondency for the consequences that their actions bring, while on the other hand the person that was murdered may have a family member who now is experiencing grief for the loss. Traditionally, people focus more on the injured party, so it is clear that those wounded by another person will experience some degree of unhappiness and torment to the audience. A prime example of how Maldoror brought temptations, violence, and death to the lives of a rarely happy family. Before Maldoror trespasses into their home, the father is appreciating his life by stating, “We…

Path To Deterioration American author, Cassia Leo, once wrote, “The quickest path to self-destruction is to push away the people around you” (Leo). Leo is claiming that loneliness easily causes the destruction of a human. In Jon Krakauer’s novel Into the Wild, he showcases a similar opinion on solitude through the story of Chris McCandless. Chris McCandless runs away from his family and former life to start one of his own, by himself, in the Alaskan wilderness. Similarly, in Ray Bradbury’s novel The Illustrated Man, the idea that solitude plays a huge role in the self destruction of man is shown through a mans magic tattoos that have been haunting him with their stories ever since they were first drawn.…

In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, loneliness is a constant pushing force throughout the novel that influences the strong desire for companionship within its protagonists. Through the use of several literary elements, Steinbeck expresses multiple examples of loneliness and the search for companionship with George and Lennie. As Steinbeck presents these examples, multiple themes of loneliness being associated with a connection to home and the desire for companionship often requiring a sacrifice appear clearly to the reader. One literary element that Steinbeck uses is the absence of the Boss’s name and Curley’s wife’s name. The absence of the boss’s names shows that he doesn’t have an important part to play in the story.…

Paragraphs in the story use the repeated pattern of having the second and third sentence rhyme with the remaining sentences being varied in length giving the book a musical quality that serves to enhance the flow of the story (Tunnell, 2015, p.23). Understatement is uses loosely at the end of the story when CJ explains that he is glad they came to the soup kitchen, this statement allows the reader to reflect on the rest of the book and the illustrations to understand why exactly he was glad to be there (Tunnell, 2015, p.24). Unexpected insights are the backbone of this story with the young CJ learning how his Nana 'can always see beauty where he never thought to look', this is the underlying motif of this story (Tunnell, 2015, p.25). Weak writing is evident in the condescension of the story (Tunnell, 2015, p.26).
