Throughout the duration of the film, The Pygmalion Effect and the Power of Positive Expectations, conflict, symbolic interaction and structural functionalism were prominent. Conflict is relevant to the film when Dr. Philip Zimbardo states that teachers treat children who may be a “late bloomer” or “low performer” differently than those who are doing well in school. Symbolic interaction is shown when the teachers began to treat those “late bloomers” differently than the others and eventually those once known “late bloomers” they actually performed significantly better than the children who were already doing well in school. This concept relates to the film because after Allyson’s cousin was established as a white person, carried a white person, and had white babies, she did not want to come back to her black family. She had a whole different identity for her now white experience and her previous black experience. Segregation described by Ferris & Stein (2016) is “the physical and legal separation of groups by race and ethnicity” (p. 236). Ms. Hobbs briefly touches on the facts that many things were different between blacks and whites. Examples would be jobs, facilities, seating, homes, etc. Racial assimilation defined by Ferris & Stein (2016) is “the process by which racial minority groups are absorbed into the dominant group through intermarriage” (p. 236). Due to Allyson’s cousin acting white, marrying a white man and having white babies, the minority group is slowing starting to absorb into the dominant group. This will continue for decades to come until eventually, the whole population will be a mix of other races.
