There are many people and religious sects that resemble the Scribes and Pharisees from when Jesus was walking the earth. Even though there is plenty of evidence of the events that took place some two thousand years ago, people and religious groups do not believe they had taken place. Some groups that could resemble the Pharisees and Scribes of today lack some of the attributes of the teachers of the past. When Jesus was dealing with the questions of the different religious sects of the day, He was here to die for all our sins, but He had said that he is here to bring Israel back into submission to God (Matthew 15:24). When the Pharisees questioned Jesus asking who He was, and if he was the Messiah, Jesus gave them parables or told them they were the keepers of the Law and the teachers. It was not because of their lack of knowledge of the scriptures, but of their lack of heart that they could not see who Jesus was. Some of the problems the Scribes and Pharisees had, was they distorted the law to fit their needs and to make themselves look superior than the ordinary person. They dressed to impress those around them, and made it a point to pray out loud and in view of everyone. The problem with this was they were breaking the Law as well building up their self-esteem, when they should have had the common man’s interest to better serve the Church. Although these qualities characterize many people and groups, todays Scribes and Pharisees is the Catholic Church.
