The Practice Of Mindfulness Exercise

This topic reminds of one of my professor in graduate school who use to start his classes with a five minute mindfulness exercise. He would lead us through it, and it always calmed the class and enhanced learning mood. Ever since I try to use it when under stress or just feeling lost.

I will obviously integrate the practice of mindfulness in my treatment plan. The mind as we know it is a powerful faculty that can control a person’s feelings and behavior. A good percentage of clients seeking therapy are struggling with issues related to distorted thoughts. In most cases their thoughts have taken over their lives, instead of the other way around. Mindfulness for sure is one powerful way to tame a wondering mind.

    According to Buddhism, mindfulness is “the gentle effort to be aware or awareness of the present reality,” and there are many programs and therapy methods that uses mindfulness as their core treatment. For example, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a well structured group program that teaches mindfulness meditation to relieve the symptoms of psychological, physical and psychosomatic suffering (Grossmann, 2004).
