The use of self-management strategies such as meditation, yoga and deep-breathing exercises has increased significantly since the 2002 (NHIS,2009). Many individuals seeking CAM treatment for mood disorders also turn to mind–body practices, such as meditation, yoga, qi-gong, tai-chi and acupuncture of which rank among the top ten CAM practices reported by adults in the 2007. A report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Department of Health and Human Services, reviewed a variety of meditation-based practices (Aleeze S Moss, 2011)The report indicated that the overall data suggest therapeutic benefits from a variety of meditation-based practices for health conditions, including mood disorders (Aleeze S Moss, 2011). Approximately 5% of adults in the United States practice yoga, with the majority of them practicing hatha yoga which combines the training of the body in physical and emotional transformation with deep breathing exercises or pranayama (Lisa A. Uebelacker, 2014). In a two-month study with patients who were not responding to antidepressants, yoga was used as an intervention and patients exhibited significant decreases in depression symptoms and significant increases in an aspect of mindfulness and in behavior it is believed that the decreased depression found in these yoga studies may related to the changes in brain waves and the decreased cortisol levels reported during yoga postures and programs.
