Philosophy of Music Education
Society views music education as the last place, silver medalist, in determining a student’s academic success. It is often undervalued and considered an elective part of an individual’s education; however, music education is one of the most involved forms of education offered in public school institutions. President Gerald Ford once said “Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them… The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.” This idea of a complete education cannot exist without the presence of music in our school systems.
The purpose of music education is to make musicians. This may seem like a simple concept, but so many people lack the understanding of what the word “musician” truly means.
Being able to play a couple of pop songs on a piano or a scale on a trumpet does not make someone a musician. They may have musical ability, but so many other ingredients go into the recipe of making a musician. A musician takes lines and dots on a page and turns them into a form of emotional expression. Musicians express the things that cannot be put into words, but so desperately need to be heard. They paint silence with melodies and harmonies that bring people to a unified emotion and passion. The role of music education is to ensure that students have a way to communicate and share their passions.
