As students rush into class, Shannon Anderson, the White Bear South Campus Band Director, sits patiently in her office, wearing her casual band jacket with her last name on it. Mrs. Anderson’s drive for music became present while she was in band in the 6th grade. Her passion for teaching she says was different, she always loved to play school with her brother, and always wanted to become a teacher from the time she was little. After Mrs. Anderson’s middle school years in band, she went onto high school, then she went to college. While in college, which was Mrs. Anderson’s favorite years of playing, she found her inspiration for how to teach her classroom from her favorite teacher. The Philosophy of My Band Director When thinking about my band director in high school, I see her as an interventionist in Wolfgang and Glickman’s classroom management philosophy. Since my junior year of high school, I have observed my band director in her middle school band classes. Because her ensemble numbers have been growing rapidly, she has turned into an interventionist. She does not give the students much free time because they have the opportunity to get very loud and out of control. Her 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade band classes all consist of more than 60 students and just one teacher.…

In the exciting, event filled book, “Notes from an Accidental Band Geek,” Erin Dionne describes the life of a high school band student thoroughly. Erin Dionne keeps the book interesting at all times, by describing the drama that shows up in a high schoolers life. This book is written informally, making it seem as if the book is somewhat of a journal or diary. These reasons alone will make any reader jump at the opportunity to read, “Notes from an Accidental Band Geek.” As a result of Erin Dionne describing life as a high school music student perfectly, I would hand this book of to any music student or band director.…

It was the second week middle school when my band teacher had asked for me to stay after class: “Rachel you should think about quitting the band.” At that moment, I had felt my mind go blank; I was devastated. I had always known I was a bit behind in learning the notes and developing the sound of my tone; however, I had never once thought about quitting band. I loved music; just turning on the radio brightened my mood. I felt impatient in my other classes, waiting until I could go and pick up my instrument.…

These experiences help her push students to try their best and be the best they can as a musician and as a person. The way she helps students understand and play music is amazing to watch because she knows just how much all of her students are going through. She doesn’t only care about how well her students play and how much they practice outside of school; she cares about how their day is going and if they are excelling in all of their classes.…

This experience has not only given me the chance to gain invaluable insights into what all goes into successfully educating students, but it has also shown me the importance of individualization. As with my experience in aural rehabilitation, educational methods often require the teacher or tutor to identify and/or anticipate the needs of those they wish to reach. Not only have I been able to work on such skills through my work as a preceptor, but I have also through my job as a double bass instructor for elementary school aged students. As most of my preparation as a music teacher came from years of studying the technical aspects of the instrument itself, relaying this information to much younger musicians posed quite a challenge. In order to reach my students, I needed to identify both their prior musical knowledge as well as their individual learning styles.…
