The Cold War was a period of intense hostile conflict characterized by a battle of policies and propaganda between the Soviet countries and a coalition of countries led by the United States. America took the correct approach in dealing with the Cold War from 1945 until 1953 because the United States was able to fight communism without a full-blown war. The United States’ decision to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as well as their efforts to exercise containment of Communism, and their strategic use of image allowed the United States to achieve their goal of containing Communism.
The formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was one way the United States took the correct approach in dealing with the Cold War. NATO was formed in 1949 and was made up of twelve nations. The formation of NATO entered America into a peacetime military alliance, and all of the countries agreed ““an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all.” The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was a collective response that deterred the Soviet Union from attacking any one of the twelve nations involved. America’s involvement in NATO solidified their peaceful approach to the Cold War and was ultimately a success because it showed the Soviet Union that the United States or any of the twelve countries did not stand for invasion, or the spread of Communism.
