LNG: Demoralizer “I am pessimistic about the human race because it is too ingenious for its own good. Our approach to nature is to beat it into submission. We would stand a better chance of survival if we accommodated ourselves to this planet and viewed it appreciatively, instead of skeptically and dictatorially.” ― E.B. White. In accommodation to the environment, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants that are being planned to be built in between Brownsville and Port Isabel should be cancelled to keep the Rio Grande and South Padre Island a highly admired tourist site. Liquefied natural gas is natural gas in a liquid form, produced by cooling the gas to -259°F through a process called liquefaction. Even though there is a low percentage (5%-15%) LNG will catch a fire, the LNG’s vapor can explode when hemmed in a constricted space (Valley Green Space). The vast industrialization LNG plants would bring to the Rio Grande Valley could overrun important economic careers that depend on the environment. “The massive industrialization and pollution that LNG will bring could erode important economic drivers such as commercial fishing, shrimping, and beach and nature tourism” (Valley Green Space). Since part of the RGV is next to the Gulf of Mexico, many jobs in that area are associated with fishing. Additionally, the beautiful tourist South Padre Island is at bay, and the tourists who come by to take in the beauty always need someone to help them discover the sights and wonders…
