Life in the Middle Ages and Life in the Elizabethan Era: A Comparison
1. Social Conduct/Values
-The people of the Middle Ages greatly value their religion: Roman Catholic. They are hardcore believers of the Church doctrine that any Christian denying a single sentence written on the Law is a heretic and should be severely punished through excommunication, public hanging and other painful stuff. But heretics are given a chance to take back what they said, they get to live, but are still thrown down to the outskirts of society. They could be kings, lords, knights, farmers, carpenters, and many more. On the other hand, the only duty of women is basically being their husbands' wives. They take care of their children and their property. Virgins become objects of courtly love, where in knights court them and sometimes compete for their hand. It's their chivalric code. The queen may be a woman in the high class, but her role is pretty much the same as all other women: being the king's wife. Ever wonder why we know the names of the kings of the Middle Ages like William the Conqueror and King Richard I yet we never heard about their wives? Yes, even queens were not given utmost importance in this time. That all changed in the Elizabethan Era, when the name of the era originated from a queen, who is a woman. It was obvious that this woman has done great things for her country, thus having them love her so much to name an era after her. But this did not fully give women equal rights with men. Women were still given less job opportunities. They were still just wives of their husbands. Well, at least this era has given humanity the idea that women can be just as good as a ruler as men. It's a nice little baby step to giving women the rights we have
