Knights In The Middle Ages Essay

In the times of the Middle Ages, there was a very prominent social structure set into place. The Middle Ages had people such as; Kings, Lords, Nobles, Knights and, Peasants. During this time period, there was a Feudal system in place. This system meant that if someone like a peasant worked for a lord or the King, they would be rewarded with land. This system kept everyone satisfied. To be a knight meant that you were to fight, protect and work for the Lords of an area. Since the knights represented people of higher social status, there was a specific way for them to dress and act. When someone was a knight, a lot was expected out of them. They were supposed to be noble, brave and kind. The knights were also to follow an unspoken code of conduct. Knights were thought of as honorable men who rode on horseback.

It can be argued that knights have slowly evolved in to what is known as an army today. Some knights were paid and they were to protect their country and their leader. For instance, the king could be seen as the President of the United States. The President leads the military. The military’s job is to protect the President and all of the people under his rule. Although they do not match up completely, this could be seen as similar to the social structure was set up in the Middle Ages. Without knights, the world may not have evolved the way it did. The Code of Conduct is in place for everyone in today’s time. You are to treat everyone with respect and to be loyal and courageous. Also, Jousting may have led to other sports such as fencing. Feudalism can be seen as quite similar to Clientage. This system was used in ancient Rome. Clientage is where a leader promises goods or money for political support. Feudalism is where a leader offers land in exchange for protection. Although it may be hard to see, knights have influenced so much more than they are given credit
