Gregor's Father In The Metamorphosis

In the novella, The Metamorphosis, there is a great deal of evidence that shows Mr. Samsa, Gregor 's father, is the reason that Gregor turned into a bug. Throughout the story, it explains how poorly Gregor’s family has treated him since their father’s company failed, leaving them in debt. Gregor’s importance to the family is only to pay off the family debt. Because of the lack of love and care that Gregor has received, he began to feel like less of a person. The person who contributes the most to this feeling Gregor has is his father. Mr. Samsa is abusive towards Gregor in countless different ways, causing Gregor’s transformation. In this quote, Gregor talks about how miserable he is in his current job, but cannot leave because of his father’s debts. Gregor’s father, Mr. Samsa, is an emotionally abusive person because Gregor is forced to pay off his fathers debts. In the quote stated above, it is evident that Gregor is not happy in the work he is doing now; however, Gregor feels as if he must endure the misery for his family. After going further into The Metamorphosis, the story reveals that Gregor 's father had the capability to pay off his own debts entire time. Not only did Mr. Samsa abuse Gregor by having him pay off the debts, he used Gregor for his own selfish ways. His father failed as a parent by holding him back from having a successful, happy life. Samsa’s psychological and physical abuse would be when he locked Gregor in his room and ceased interacting with Gregor. After Mr. Samsa viewed the monster Gregor had transformed into, “he seized in his right hand the manager’s cane . . . picked up in his left hand a heavy newspaper from the table, and stamping his feet started brandishing the cane and the newspaper to drive Gregor back into his room” (Kafka 18). This dramatic event was the start of Gregor’s isolation. Grete, Gregor’s sister, took care of Gregor, but she too began to lose interest in Gregor and his well being. Not only was he not allowed out of his room, but his father would not come to take care of him or even consider him apart of the family anymore.
