. . Well, I haven’t given up hope completely; once i’ve gotten the money together to pay off my parents’ debts to him- . . . Then I’m going to make the big break” (Kafka 4). In this quote, Gregor talks about how miserable he is in his current job, but cannot leave because of his father’s debts. Gregor’s father, Mr. Samsa, is an emotionally abusive person because Gregor is forced to pay off his fathers debts. In the quote stated above, it is evident that Gregor is not happy in the work he is doing now; however, Gregor feels as if he must endure the misery for his family. After going further into The Metamorphosis, the story reveals that Gregor 's father had the capability to pay off his own debts entire time. Not only did Mr. Samsa abuse Gregor by having him pay off the debts, he used Gregor for his own selfish ways. His father failed as a parent by holding him back from having a successful, happy life. Samsa’s psychological and physical abuse would be when he locked Gregor in his room and ceased interacting with Gregor. After Mr. Samsa viewed the monster Gregor had transformed into, “he seized in his right hand the manager’s cane . . . picked up in his left hand a heavy newspaper from the table, and stamping his feet started brandishing the cane and the newspaper to drive Gregor back into his room” (Kafka 18). This dramatic event was the start of Gregor’s isolation. Grete, Gregor’s sister, took care of Gregor, but she too began to lose interest in Gregor and his well being. Not only was he not allowed out of his room, but his father would not come to take care of him or even consider him apart of the family anymore. Even before Gregor became a bug, there was not much interaction between Gregor and his father; Gregor was only useful to Mr. Samsa to help pay him pay off his debts. The way he was being treated contributed to the decrease of his human mind and the increase of his bug state. Soon, his father’s abuse grows into an even more aggressive physical

Gregor constantly removes pleasure from his life—diving deep into complete isolation. After his physical metamorphosis, Gregor ironically begins to develop his human characteristics in order for Kafka to illustrate how extremism starves one from essential human nourishment. His physical transformation is not only a threat for his household, but also disgusts his employer, as is evidenced by the reaction of his manager: “The manager burst out with loud “oh!” – it sounded like a rush of wind- and now he could see him standing closest to the door, his hand pressed over his open mouth slowly backing away, as if repulsed by an indivisible and unrelenting force.” (Kafka 788) This toxic situation for Gregor alludes to the ruthlessness of the society and selfishness of his own family. Gregor’s metamorphosis into a “lowly insect” brings to light the stark reality that society and family is unwilling to accept individuals with a sense of self into their…

In the beginning of the story Gregor is described as “squirming” (3) and “shocked to hear his own voice,” (5) which resembles his struggle of finding out who he is because he has turned into what family/society wants him to be. The fact that he is “shocked to hear his own voice” justifies that Gregor is not only confused on he has become, but it exposes the reality that Gregor never voices his concerns on being someone he isn’t. It startles him to realize that he is a prisoner within his own body and can’t figure out who he has become, which Kafka makes the reader feel sympathy for him because of his confusion in his mind. Towards the middle of the story Gregor “inconsistently darted madly” (18) around the room when his father was chasing him, which symbolizes Gregor’s chaotic state of trying to live up to his father’s approval because he “didn’t want to let his family down” (11) and how he feels “useless in his present state” (27). Kafka describes Gregor as “simply happy” when Gregor finds solitude in his own body, which shows that Gregor can accept who he is only in his bug form and doesn’t dwell too heavily on the expectations that has been set before him, which makes him authentic because he doesn’t feel he needs to meet his family’s expectations anymore (32).…

Through the course of the story, he eventually lost all capacity to talk to his family. I feel as though turning into a bug was hard for Gregor, as it would for anybody, but loosing his ability to communicate was much harder. He wanted so bad to tell his family that he was still the same Gregor; that he was still in that bug body, but he couldn’t. He also really wanted to tell his sister that he had planned on putting her in music school for her violin but couldn’t do that either. Turning into a bug made Gregor not human physically, but not being able to voice his thoughts, ultimately made him loose…

These quotes show how Gregor believed that after his father 's failure in business, his family solely relied on him, but there is evidence in the text against this. At the end of the story, after Gregor has passed, his family comes to the realization that they actually have more money than they expected. Kafka writes, "Leaning comfortably back in their seats they canvassed their prospects for the future, and it appeared on closer insepction that these were not all bad, for the jobs they had got, which so far they had never really discussed with other, were all three admirable and likely to lead to better things later on." (139). This shows how once Gregor is out of the picture, the family is being seen as they really are.…

Drawing from the perspective of novels such as Frankenstein, Kafka portrays Gregor Samsa’s isolation from both society and his family in his bosses rejection of his outward appearance, and the families revulsion of his new physical form (in one case the mother faints, and the father beats him off life a wild animal.) Another use of the theme of Isolation can be seen In Gregor’s willing, and almost preferable, enjoyment of being left alone. This can be interpreted as a legitimate enjoyment, or enjoyment derived from getting used to being alienated and alone, as he discusses had happened before in his life, noting his lack of friends at his…
