When people think of a psychologist they always seem to think that it is for adults only. The mental health of children however, is sometimes overlooked. Adults believe that kids do not have any problems because their life is supposed to be happy. But kids go through stress and psychological disorders, in fact, according research 20% of children in the United States suffer from some sort of mental illness each year. Upon considering obtaining a degree in child counseling psychology I discovered how important it is to take time to learn as much as we can about the type of work in this field, job vacancies, pros and cons of the field, as well as learning how long it would take to graduate.

Child counselors often work wherever there is a need for mental health services for children. Therefore, a degree on counseling psychologist might give me the opportunity to work at a school either as a teachers, counselor even as a supervisor. Hospitals also hire counseling phycologist to supervise their clients. Other places that might hire a psychologist are mental health clinics, medical centers, family services or other health facilities. Psychologists are hired at mental health clinics to provide one on one treatment or holding group therapy sessions. Another option for psychologists is to open their own private office. Bernalillo Academy is a sub-acute residential treatment center that serves youth between the ages of five and seventeen with a diagnosis of Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, and other Autism Spectrum Disorders as well as Emotional and Behavioral Disorders and Developmental Delays. As a full time employee my job would be to provide quality services for children and using individual family and group treatment modalities. In addition, my job would require me to Assess, diagnose, and treat students with emotional, behavioral, and mental health issues. Some of the duties I would have would be to conduct individual, group, and family therapy.
