The “Las meninas” is a painting that Diego Velázques painted in 1656. Velázques was a painter in the 17th century. He painted portraits of King Philip IV and his family. The Las meninas is a painting of the King’s daughter and her attendees getting her ready for a special occasion. Also in the painting is Velázques himself painting the painting. In all his other drawings, he paints himself in them. In las meninas, the painting portrays the King's daughter and her royalty to the kingdom. The painting also portrays how the daughter is treated in the kingdom. She is treated with very high respect as the King’s daughter. In Picasso’s painting which was done in 1957, it portrays the thoughts of the daughter. The colors on the face show the …show more content…
The princess is the focus of the painting and always held higher than anyone in the picture. In Velázques’s version the attendees work for her and in picasso's version, the princess is holding the attendee. Picasso made the dress the same sand yellow color and shape. I think that Picasso made the painting of the mirror that is in the background of the original by Velázques. So the paintings seem to have the same objects in them to me. The colors in Picasso’s background match the colors on Velázques version. The setting of both the paintings is the same but not in as much detail as Velázques’s version. And lastly, the people in Picasso’s version are the same. The princess is the main point and the attendees are lower than her. Picasso has the princess holding the attendee to represent that they are lower.
Now Velázques was known for realism and that is what he made this painting in the style of. Picasso on the other hand painted in cubism. The two paintings look so much different from each other just by having straight lines. In the painting. Velázques ads himself into every paintings. Picasso doesn’t include Velázques or himself in his version. Also the attendee count is subtracted by 3 in Picasso’s version. The attendee is also being held by the princess. These are just a few of the differences that I saw in the

Charles Emile-August Carolus-Duran’s piece titled Portrait of an Artist in her Studio represents the action of a women painting. This piece was made in the late 19th century (c. 1880) and was considered one of Carolus-Duran’s great society portraits. The piece’s present location is the La Salle University Art Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and its original location was *****. This portrait is oil on canvas, and the “quick, loose brushwork” technique can be accredited to masters such as Diego Velasquez and Edouard Manet (placard.) Just as the painting suggests, the painting’s subject is an artist, many say Carolus-Duran’s wife or mistress, in her studio.…

Images of the “Virgin of Guadalupe” seem to be everywhere. As a symbol of “freedom for the oppressed native populations” according to Jeanette Favrot Peterson author of The Virgin of Guadalupe: Symbol of Conquest or Liberation?, the Virgin of Guadalupe seems to be a reoccurring piece of art starting at the middle of the sixteenth century. A very unique piece in its own the “Virgin of Guadalupe” by Miguel Gonzalez in 1698, is part of Spanish colonial art but also consists of different techniques to emerge into a world where countless of the same image already existed. Miguel Gonzales created an image using inspiration by two places, first the image was surfacing throughout Mexico being replicated in the same way as the original. As with most , the trade of goods was involved to create the style Gonzalez used.…

When comparing these two works of art, I must first acknowledge the similarities to truly understand the differences. Upon my initial impression, I noticed both were frontal human forms of figurative sculptures. Both sculptures were created from stone using carved or subtractive techniques. Although these two works do have similarities they are also very different.…

Indeed the most striking difference is the different nature of the work: Delacroix’s one being a painting on a canvas, is a two dimensional work and Wall’s final piece, even if the photographic medium was used, is a three dimensional transparency lightbox. The space that they use in an exhibition room and the effect on the viewer is consequently different, the painting using a light that comes from an outside source and the lightbox giving ‘birth’ to its own light. These differences are mainly a consequence of the techniques and materials used, (that are strongly) affected by the era they were made in. But the narrative of the works of art are different as well: The Death of Sardanapalus teems with figures (16 living) and an action of destruction is depicted; The Destroyed Room has not even one character, it is a still life, the trace left by a violent action. This are the impressions after a first glance.…

These features help explain why the painting can be seen as an expression of Enriquez’ disappointment in Cuba’s position at the time. For example, there is the road behind the main subjects of the painting. It is long and winding yet completely deserted. This could reflect how Enriquez may think that there is no help on the way; only the Cubans can save themselves. Also worthy of note is the prominence of what can be considered to be “fiery” colors at the forefront of the painting.…

Second, they both wanted to focus on their models making them the most important part instead of the background, and what was around the models (MindEdge). Third, the pair wanted to capture the tone/mood through the body language of their models. Fourth, each painting had the lighting to draw the viewers’ eyes to the women and children.…

In 1937, the Spanish government commissioned Pablo Picasso to paint an oil on canvas mural for the 1937 World Fair in Paris, France. Guernica is a large piece, sitting at twenty-six feet wide and eleven feet tall, and was placed at the entrance of their pavilion. Picasso found inspiration from reading about the bombing of Guernica, Spain by the German air force, and although not a complete portrayal of the event, Picasso conveys the suffering and agony of the people and the tragedy of the war. Using only black, white, and grey oil paints, the mural uses symbolism, intersecting lines, and cubism to emphasize the misery of the people rather than the focusing on the entire incident. When first looking at the image, the eyes are drawn to the center where there are intersecting lines that start at the bottom corners and meet at the top of the lamp.…

Picasso’s use of color is rather interesting, as even though it provides a sense of dullness, it also provides a sense of realism, as the colors are natural and not extravagant. Picasso’s usage of unity is shown within the variety of shapes that we used. By forming into the shape of a women, it is entirely clear on what was the main focus that Picasso wanted to discuss. Another principle of design that appears to be efficiently used is the use of variety. Picasso uses more than one shape to form the women, leading one to infer that different shapes are the different characteristics in an individual.…
