Migrant Mother Vs The Child's Bath

Migrant Mother was photographed by Dorothea Lange in 1936. During that time, the Great Depression was hitting homes all across America. Many families, especially low-class families, were living in poverty. Dorothea Lange happened to come across one of those families when she was traveling in Nipomo, California (Congress). Lange approached this woman who was sitting underneath a tent with her children huddled around her (Congress). Lange captured the photograph using realism/social realism and American regionalism (MindEdge). She expressed realism by snapping a glimpse into the everyday life/rustic life of poor families (American families) during the Great Depression (MindEdge). Mary Cassatt painted The Child’s Bath in 1893. Cassatt was an …show more content…
First, both of these pieces are focused on women. Each artist centered/asymmetrically their work on the models in their piece (MindEdge). Second, they both wanted to focus on their models making them the most important part instead of the background, and what was around the models (MindEdge). Third, the pair wanted to capture the tone/mood through the body language of their models. Fourth, each painting had the lighting to draw the viewers’ eyes to the women and children. Like stated before, the pair wanted to focus on the models and they both used light to help draw that focus to their models. Last, each share the same themes: the life of a mother to their children. In the Migrant Mother, Lange is showing the life of a mother by showing the protective quality of a mother. Showing what mothers will do in order to provide for their children. In The Child’s Bath, Cassatt is showing the traditional quality of a mother. Showing how mothers take care of their …show more content…
Mainly, the pieces of art are from different eras. The Migrant Mother, black and white photo, came during the time many artists were focusing on realist styles, capturing the true views of the world (MindEdge). The Child’s Bath, oil on canvas painting, came during the time of impressionism. Artist in impressionism focused more on lighting and color. Using the realistic style, Lange had rugged/realistic lines of the mother and children in her piece; whereas Cassatt, used light brushstrokes and daubs of pure color/ a bright palette (MindEdge) to show round curve and edges of the mother and child. The mothers were facing a different matter based on the era the pieces of artwork were in. The Migrant Mother was during the time when mothers were sacrificing what they needed to for their children. The Migrant Mother had sold the tires on her cars just to be able to feed her family. Now, in The Child’s Bath, this mother isn’t struggling to survive, or fighting to keep her child safe. This mother is the “poster-mom” of all mothers. She is caring for her child like every day loving mothers do. Even though the act of bathing may seem simple, in the painting, the way the mother has her arm wrapped and holding her foot, is showing a tender way of protecting. Both these paintings may show the different meanings of a mother, but they both show the unconditional love the mothers have, and that has traveled through all eras of

Life & Death Through elaborate carving, casting, painting, and other technical processes, artists can ingeniously turn dead stone, metal, or plaster into vivid human-looking sculptures. George Segal’s Blue Women In a Black Chair, which was made in 1981, is a typical painted sculpture that reflects the core of human emotions. The Untitled large man accomplished by Tom Claassen in 1999, likewise, is another excellent reflective sculpture. Although these two are both outstanding pieces mirroring experiences in real life, they differ in materials, size, color, and body gesture in order to present different stage of human being, conveying different meanings.…

Still, these depictions of Cassatt, despite having her personal disapproval, were not entirely inaccurate. Caught between an opportunity for a public life and the backlash that would result of being a public, unmarried working upper class woman, Cassatt often had images that included women in public with senses of judiciousness and trepidation. For example, in the painting In the Omnibus (Color Print. 1891; Figure 8), Cassatt contrasts the differences between the guarded, middle class woman who seems nervous over getting caught doing something this unfashionable against a working class woman and her child who is blissfully evading that social parameter. This painting, therefore, can be read and appreciated by multiple audiences once more.…

In the photo to the left, there is a 32-year old woman sitting in what appears to be a makeshift tent with her young child over her left shoulder and her infant new-born in her arms (“Migrant”). The mother and her older child are wearing raggedy clothing and have expressions that look either exhausted, sad or both. It can be determined that this photo was taken in Nipomo, California in 1936, during the time of the Great Depression based on the caption of the photo (“Migrant”). The photograph is of Florence Thompson who was a “migrant worker” at the time this photograph was taken (Migrant).
