On Tuesday November 15, 2016, I went to the Fulton County Superior Courthouse with some classmates. We arrived around 9:30am and proceeded to go to room 4C. The layout in the courtroom was exactly as one would see on a television show. It had the Judge sitting front and center and her chair was raised higher than everyone in the courtroom. Her position was like she was looking over at everyone. The jury box is on the far left of the room. Right next to the jury was the prosecution’s table. The defense’s table was located on the right side of the courtroom. In the front of the courtroom, there is a witness stand, court reporter, and a clerk. One of the preliminary hearings that my classmates and I sat in on was The State of Georgia vs. Jaqueline Cunningham. Cunningham was charged with aggravated assault, battery, and cruelty to children in the third degree. Cunningham had originally waived her preliminary hearing in order for her to have a bond hearing. The Judge that was sitting on in this case had said that because of the charges that were being brought against Ms. Cunningham were so egregious, that the Judge said that she would consider bail after a preliminary hearing. After that, Ms. Cunningham stated that she would like to have a preliminary hearing. The Judge then asked if the prosecution and defense were ready to have a preliminary hearing at this time, to which the defense and prosecution responded that they were.
