An example would be the time when June was convinced that she had to be genius for her mother, however, Suyuan slapped her and said “Only ask you be your best” (Tan, 136). This shows that all of those years of June believing that her mother did no care for her was a misconception, and Suyuan’s intention was to give June a chance to become an independent person and to see her capablities. However, Suyuan did not tell June her purpose until she was an adult, which inhibited June from believing in herself, which was a result of her assuming that her mother did not support her in anything she accomplished. The mother-daughter conflict was carried throughout of June’s life and was not resolved until June’s adulthood.
