The world is constantly changing, therefore the way food is grown must change too. Companies are adding GMO’s or Genetically Modified Organisms to food without telling consumers. These Genetically Modified Organisms are used to help food grow and deal with the weather changes and parasites. Congress has passed a bill that requires companies to label products made with GMO’s. I think Congress made a smart decision to make companies label their products. People need to know what they are putting in their bodies. In the article, Congress Passes GMO Labeling Rule that Supersede Tough State Measures by Heather Haddon, companies now have to include the GMO’s they add to their food on labels. According to Haddon, companies that violate the new law will be fined up to $1,000 a day. This new bill passed in the Senate and passed 306-117 in the House of Representatives. Even the White House is anticipated to sign the new bill. Genetically Modified Organisms have been used in the United States for two decades with federal approval. Haddon says, “The vast majority of corn and soybeans grown in the U.S. is genetically engineered, and the Grocery Manufacturers Association trade group estimates that 70% to 80% of foods eaten in the U.S. contain ingredients that have been genetically modified.” GMO’s are used to make crops hardier but environmentalists believe that they can harm the environment and need pesticides that can harm us.
