We should be allowed to know what goes into our mouths
Audience: Grocery shoppers ages 16-30
As a nation we have developed into a society where the sky has no limits. We have walked on the moon, we have invented electricity, we have invented the internet, and we are now on the verge of finalizing medication to help cure a life threatening disease, cancer. Let’s face it, mankind has advanced tremendously as a race since day one. As these inventions were made, there has always been disagreement on whether the invention would benefit mankind, or if it would be as pointless as a warning label on a pack of cigarettes. One of the most well known controversial topics in the US is whether companies …show more content…
After watching and reading countless articles of reasons why and why not we should label GMO’s, I personally believe that companies should label GMO’s because GMO’s have hazardous life threatening chemicals that affect the environment, not knowing what you’re eating can affect your health, and because Americans deserve the right to know exactly what they’re putting into their mouths.
So what exactly are GMO’s? GMO stands for genetically modified organism. A genetically modified organism is the final outcome of a laboratory process where the genes from an organism has been extracted and artificially forced into the genes of another life form (NonGMOproject.org). This life form can be either a plant or an animal. In this case, genes have been extracted and inserted into crops to help them become more resistant to pesticides, and herbicides. During this process, multiple chemicals are affiliated with the crops, which can majorly impact and affect the environment. Once the chemicals have touched the crops, the soil and anything else that interacts with it has automatically become contaminated.Thousands of insects interact with …show more content…
Although studies have shown that approximately 90% of Americans support labeling of GMO’s, companies still deny us the right to know what exactly we are consuming into our bodies(cite here). Throughout the world, there is an estimate of 64 countries that require labeling of GMO’s. There are countries like Japan, Australia, China, and Brazil that are strong supporters of our labeling GMO’s because those countries believe that their people should know what exactly they are putting into their bodies. If other countries support labeling, why can’t the US support it as well? Although there are a couple of states that are trying to pass bills to mandate labeling on GMO products, there is not enough enforcement to have the whole country cooperate with this dilemma. As a country, we need to unite as a whole and work together to give Americans a natural right to know exactly what they are putting into their
