Lucy is a little girl who loves cookie dough ice cream, the color pink and Barbie dolls. At the age of six she was diagnosed with the autism spectrum disorder, but she really didn’t understand the meaning of the word “disability” until her parents enrolled her in their neighborhood public school under the assumption that the school would provide a range of appropriate services that would assure her social and academic success. Her parents were unprepared to say the least for the school’s placement of Lucy into a regular classroom setting without any supports, or accommodations or support system. That particular school did not have the funds to have such a system at the time. Before the end of that school year, Lucy was having tantrums regularly in a classroom with one completely frustrated teacher who simply abandoned all attempts at educating Lucy. She was left unsupervised, and would often slip from her classroom and wonder about the school hallways. One day she was able to escape to the school-parking field, before being stopped by a concerned visiting parent, who happened to be entering the school lobby that day. Many people believe that inclusive education is when a child is just thrown into a regular school environment with no support systems. The point of this story is to give an example of improper use inclusion, in order to help aid one better understand of what proper inclusive education really is. “Inclusion is defined as a professional belief that students with disabilities should be integrated into general education classrooms whether or not they can meet traditional curricular standards and should be full members of those classrooms" (DeMatthews, 2015).
