Somehow we have got it all confused because the American justice system incarcerates more people per capita than anywhere in the world and has also had the highest incarceration rate since the 80 's but on the other hand the prison population has quadrupled since then also (Harahan). These criminals are obviously not learning from this method of justice and way of bringing them back to normal life. More than 2/3 of all ex-offenders are re-arrested in 3 years (Friedman2008) or less most of the time because of the charge as a previous conviction. When inmates get to do things like meet President Obama, when he took a tour of a high maximum security prison in Oklahoma, then something is wrong with the system (Escodebo). I mean seriously, I haven 't got to meet the president and you probably haven 't either. In the prison system this is what will help the whole system work better and more smoothly (Friedman2008). Between the 1800’s and 1900’s more than 75% of the United States prison inmates were involved in productive labor (Friedman2008) and this is also when the homicide rate was at an all time low. This would mean it actually worked to make the inmates work for what they have. Its definitely the most beneficial thing for an inmate (Bidas).
