For example, more colleges have begun to promote religious diversity and open the door for all religious groups to celebrate and practice their beliefs. Although the First Amendment calls for religious freedom, discrimination is still alive and well which makes it difficult for many non-Christian groups to fully practice their faith. Koppelman points out in the text that Muslim Americans have struggled to practice their faith openly by providing the example of Representative Keith Ellison and his oath using the Qur’an (p.152). However, the House of Representatives has chaplains from various religions such as Protestant, Hindu and Muslim. Overall, the influence on non-Christian religions has been rocky. When I first started my teaching career, I was at a school that created a Boys Club and a Chick’s Club that met once a month at lunch to address problems within each gender group. While the idea may be one that understandable, I always disliked this because I felt that it promoted the idea of sexism. I even asked the librarian who conducted these clubs, “Why not allow the girls to hear the problems and issues of the boys and vice versa? Wouldn’t it allow them to understand each other better?” Needless to say, the librarian thought differently. I would make sure that any club or program offered appeals to both boys and girls. Also, I think that faculty and staff play an important role in modeling gender equality. I would ask that the faculty model the use of gender-neutral/gender-inclusive language in formal and informal classroom interactions, and interact equitably with female and male students. I think it is also essential to show students that jobs and roles in society should not be based on gender. For example, I would bring in speakers or create job fairs that show that it’s okay for female students to have aspirations to be a firefighter or a policeman or its okay for boys to want to be nurses or
