Why do a large proportion of older people live alone in the US? The reason can either be parents wishing to stay on their own or the children prioritizing their privacy over the parents. Both these reasons surprise me and provoke my intellect to dig deeper. The parents here usually prefer to stay alone to avoid being a burden on their children. Indian parents, on the other hand, prefer to live with their children in the twilight years and consider it a right. Such a difference in the mindset in the east and the west needs to be carefully studied. One of the reasons why Indian children support their parents in old age is deeply rooted in the socio-religious and cultural beliefs. While as, self seeking lifestyle in American society which comes as an aftereffect of objectivism explains much of its behavior. Historically, American society is believed to have had a joint family structure in place. In fact, the Bible also makes it mandatory on the believers to take care of older parents. Is the materialistic approach towards life that has shaped how we look at relations? I leave this question for the reader to reflect upon.
