Rules create boundaries that prevent a person from feeling overwhelmed and it is a guideline to stay on track. No matter what rules exist, a person is morally responsible for everything they do. Rules arise because of different beliefs, social interactions, governance and etc. The novella, Anthem by Ayn Rand is an example of how rules keep an identity concealed. Ayn Rand talks about an individual who lives in a society that controls every aspect of life. Readers can view the struggle and the torment Equality 7-252 goes through to escape the society which is tortured with rules and regulations. The rules of the society make sure Equality live equally for each other and these-these abusive rules in the city in Anthem provided a reason for Equality

As a result of this knowledge, Equality begins to read manuscripts and started experiments in the tunnel which he discovered with his friends. “ And when we put our wires to this box when we closed the current- the wire glowed! It came to life, it turned red, and a circle of light lay on the stone before us”( Rand 59). These experiments in the tunnel lead Equality to invent the light bulb. His happiness and the help to the society made him want to present this idea to the school of the scholars. “ How dare you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the minds of your brother?” (Rand 71). But this behavior was not acceptable by the councilors because this showed disrespect towards the rules which acted like a boundary between social classes. All the hard work and suffering Equality went through, had to be ended because the society in which Equality lives individuals don’t exist. The society sees the idea of one being able to hold its own ideas as a sin. In reality, the state made him think that everything he did was a sin, but he was just living the life he wanted to live. These actions of Equality brought the fear of an individual who does not belong to the house of scholars improving by itself to councilors. Through these actions, Equality realized that humankind cannot progress if individual success is prohibited and wants to free himself which leads to creating his own
