Having to face countless amounts of hardships in a cruel, twisted society proves no easy task for anyone to accomplish, however, Equality 7-2521 was able to break this barrier and step into a new, reformed world. Throughout the course of the novel Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, Equality’s motivations allowed him to see the society people were living in from a different point of view. In a society where everyone lives by the quote “‘We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever.’” Equality is able to step outside the boundaries which the society has set in place, and has allowed himself to have individual thoughts, something which has never thought to have been possible in this world (Rand

Thus, someone needed to be able to step up and make a change, and Equality 7-2521 was the one to do this. Though he may have lived his life as a conformist during the early stages of his life, Equality 7-2521 found motivation in another person, and this instigated an alteration for him, which he aspired would diffuse to the rest of society. Until he realizes that he is in love, Equality is aware that the society is unethical, however, does nothing to fix this. This shows that he needed motivation in order to make a change for the better, and wanted to make a difference by showing someone else that he could do so. After discovering the new lightbulb, Equality begins to become more aware of what is going on around him. He feels and realizes that what he is doing is different than what he has done before. After hunting a bird, cooking and eating it, Equality states, “And we wished to be hungry again and soon, that we might know again this strange new pride in eating.”, indicating that Equality has gained a new point of view of life (79). This is the paramount change that happens to Equality, as once he realizes that not everything in life is handed to him, he begins to become more mature. “‘We love you.’” stated by The Golden One to Equality made the two of them think of what was wrong with the aforementioned sentence (86).
