However, in more recent views of leadership, it is that the role is not just the responsibility of a single person, but rather, leadership is distributed, that a variety of people, a team that contributes to effective leadership (Dunlop, 2008). “Leadership is never just one way” (Smith and Langston, 1999).This suggests that it is not just the leader that leads a team, but the whole team can contribute distinct skills to a leadership role, and Rodd (2006) states that it is important that practitioners are encouraged to take the lead in some aspects of their work which means that elements of leadership are distributed which will then have a positive impact on the staffs’ self-esteem therefore allowing the team to work effectively together. The Bristol Standard (2011), a self-evaluation framework, suggests that a supportive work environment will create openness and mutual support, which will then result in better outcomes for the organisation, improving the quality of education and care, ultimately benefiting the child (Rodd, 2006; Bristol Standard, 2011), especially as Malaguzzi (1996) states that “babies and children take and interpret models from adults, and even more so when …show more content…
Lord Laming states in his progress report in 2009 that effective leadership sets the direction of an organisation’s cultures and values, ultimately driving the quality and effectiveness of the services provided (Laming, 2009). This report was written after the Victoria Climbie Inquiry report in 2003, stating what needs to be done in order to safeguard children to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. He states that in order for this to happen, the leadership between working with multi-agencies need to be effective. However, factors such as having different priorities, working with different terms and conditions, communication will prove to bring some difficulties in achieving this (Siraj-Blatchford, Clarke and Needham, 2007). Atkinson et al (2002) concluded from their detailed study into multi-agency working that despite the obstacles and barriers that may be encountered, “leadership or drive at strategic level was considered important to keep momentum of multi-agency working going” and vision and tenacity were key for this leadership role. Consequently, in the cases of children’s death due to child abuse, like, Victoria Climbie, there needed to be a team that
