Results from NIDA-funded research have shown that prevention programs involving families, schools, communities, and the media are effective in reducing drug abuse. Thus, education and outreach are critical in helping youth and the general public understand the risks of substance abuse. Teachers, parents and medical and public health professionals must keep sending the message that drug addiction can be prevented if one never abuses drugs. ( Abuse and Addiction, 2015 ). Treatment is an important aspect of the person getting their life back, but before treatment, the person has to admit they have a problem. Most people need long-term or repeated care to stop completely and recover. A personalized treatment plan is necessary for individuals diagnosed with a substance abuse disorder according to their unique medical, psychiatric and substance use history. No single treatment is right for everyone. Effective treatment addresses all the patient 's needs, not just the drug use. Detoxification, counseling, medications, and long-term follow-up to prevent relapse are all required. Quitting drugs and alcohol is only the first step in the recovery process.
