The Impact Of Interactive Media On Children

Media Research Society has been transformed by technology and social media. The media tools for communication, collaboration, and social networking have changed the way parents and families manage their daily lives. This dynamic transformation has not only altered the way educators and parents interact with children, but also how teachers use materials in the classroom. According to a joint position statement created by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (naeyc) and the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media at Saint Vincent College, Technology and Interactive Media as Tools in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth through Age 8, “Interactive media provides challenges and opportunities to improve program quality while enhancing children’s cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and linguistic (2).” I completely agree with this statement, interactive media does help prompt the mental and physical development of children; however, if not properly supervised media can have as much of a negative effect as positive on any child. Just like the amount of time it’s also crucial for parents to understand that the content of the media also matters. I recommend choosing programs that model behavior that is valued within your community. When my son and I watch television, I always try to promote his critical thinking by asking questions like, “What would you do in this situation?” or “How would you stop that from happening?” As parents and educators, we have a unique opportunity to help young children navigate the media messages that surround them and help them to accept and celebrate
