Most of us consider ourselves to be healthy until we experience some overt sign of illness. With chronic degenerative diseases, such as heart disease, most people are unaware that the disease process is smoldering and progressing to the point that it could cause major complications, including death. Cardiovascular disease describes a range of conditions that affect the heart. Cardiovascular disease is now the leading cause of serious illness and death in United States.
The two that I will be discussing are, coronary heart disease and heart failure. At most humans age, their coronary arteries that supply the myocardium (heart muscle) itself, become progressively narrowed and begin to stiffen from the formation of fatty plaque along the inner walls of the arteries. The progression of the narrowing of the arteries is referred to as, atherosclerosis, and when the coronary arteries are involved, it is called coronary heart disease or for short CHD. As this disease progresses and the arteries become narrower, the capacity to supply blood to the myocardium is progressively reduced. As it gets worse the myocardium eventually can’t receive enough blood to meet all of its needs. The first symptom is usually severe chest pain, which is called angina pectoris. When blood supply to part of the myocardium is severely or totally restricted, this leads to myocardial infarction, because cardiac muscle cells that are deprived of blood for several minutes are thus deprived of oxygen which…
