John L. O’Sullivan, a columnist and editor who devoted himself into publishing political reviews on public magazines, always emphasized the function of “Manifest destiny” theory in territorial expansion. The Second Great Awakening awoke people’s beliefs with many religious groups appearing to represent different social classes’ interest. At that time, the United States is a new formed country that doesn’t have old history which included many oppression and injustice though those civilizations created countless cultural heritage. So, it could start at a very different point in creating great changes with little obstruction. Also, the upcoming new political system was treated by O’Sullivan as a “Union of many Republics, comprising hundreds of happy millions, calling, owning no man master, but governed by God's natural and moral law of equality, the law of brotherhood”. This system was built mostly based on the major class’s interest and needs, so it could satisfy the majority’s requests at the greatest extent. Under the conditions mentioned above, the United States could give people’s a “total” freedom and equality without a sever pullback from conservative power, which was an enfranchisement of human being that made it apart from other countries or societies of the world. And this was regarded by O’Sullivan as a mission and destiny for Americans given by God. Though I think the theory of “a mission given by god” is a method to persuade people accept his thoughts, his theory really made a great impact on imminent events. Due to these particularities could the United States “separate past but connect to future” , which made it a unique country in the world.
