Now that I can look over my past in clear detail I see that Tom felt very threatened by me as I challenged him. With me around, his life of being able to have everything was not secure, as Daisy loved me and he could not control that, and for once he wasn't the richest man around. I see now that I am dead, Tom is at ease, as everything is under his control again, including Daisy. But I also see that the guilt is getting to him, making him more violent and angry as he knows that he is an accessory to murder. I fear that one day this guilt might overcome him and he might lash out at the ones most closest to him. You see old sport I'm scared that Daisy's life is in danger and I am stuck in this timeless world unable to help her, as no matter what

1922 was a series of ups and downs for Jay Gatsby. He watched as his dream became so close, he felt like he could reach out and grab it, then watched it all come quickly tumbling down. Terrible things happen in Gatsby’s life throughout The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, yet Nick Carraway states that he turned out all right in the end. This is due to keeping his hope of his dream alive even at his lowest points, and living his life as someone to be proud of.…

Both wealth and power is interminable but our life is limited and the time wasted chasing those never-ending resources will result in feeling melancholy, loss of enthusiasm, lack in tranquility and Narcissism. Only those who are satisfied with what they have can find happiness in life. Not everyone is born with equal opportunities but those who tend to make the best out of it and enjoy it, can find joy in their life. “Daisy, with an expression of unthoughtful sadness” (13) as Nick Carraway describes pretty much explains the passive sadness within oneself. Daisy’s bright fake smile was a cover up for her inner misery which she couldn’t express outside.…

Emily Browning, a young Australian actress once said, “With young people, there’s often that carelessness, allowing yourself to get into danger – recklessness, I suppose”. This quote is applicable to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, due to the reckless behaviors of the characters. The novel presents a time of wealth, corruption and yearning, allowing the characters to experience a reckless lifestyle. Novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald, in his novel the Great Gatsby, addresses the demanding lifestyle of Americans in the twenties and the impact it had on art, literature, and culture. Fitzgerald’s purpose was to expose the truth behind this lifestyle and the damage it had on the people living in it. He adopts a glamorous yet eerie tone to convince young adult and adult readers that while their fantasy of fame, money, and glory may seem exhilarating on the outside, it lacks the happiness that the reader craves on the inside. It captures an imperative part of American history and the ways this time period shaped this country into its complexity and uniqueness through jazz, art, and an individual's own intuition. For the first time, people were reading…

The Great Gatsby is full of hidden messages and will mean different things to different people. To me the book is saying that when people are too focused on themselves they tend to hurt everyone around them. I believe that you, yourself can be your biggest enemy. Too many people don’t realize that they aren’t the only people in this world, then when they need somebody they have nobody. For example, when Gatsby died, he had no one, he had nobody to show up to his funeral, and to witness his passing.…

East and West eggers have different kinds of money which causes them to act in cruel or odd ways and reflect on the people that have “new money” and “old money” which will result from the American Dream. Symbolically people that are from West Egg are people that recently achieved the American Dream and citizens from East Egg are people that are have received money from past generations that were originally (symbolically) a West Egger. Gatsby is great example of a West Egger; he was once poor but has now achieved the American Dream and has lots of “new money”. Due to the fact that Gatsby was once quite poor, he wants to cover up his past so that he can fit in with all the other rich folk. In order to this Gatsby hosts many lavished parties,…

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby the label of outsider is awarded to Nick despite a majority of his characteristics fitting the mold of an average American man. An outsider can be defined as “a person who does not belong to a particular group; a contender not expected to win.” However, the novel seems to insinuate that it is not membership of a group that determines outsider status, but possession of power. Throughout American history, it is not the minority that is automatically the outsiders it has been those who power has been systematically stripped away. In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby could hardly be described as a member of the majority demographic because of his obscene wealth and illegal business practices.…

“The American Dream” was put into different context by Fitzgerald. In the book Gatsby says “If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay," said Gatsby. "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock." (Gatsby 121-122) Which relates to how Gatsby always thought there were endless possibility. Fitzgerald was trying to show the reader about how having a mind like this is good and bad .…

Through the manipulation of language, great significance is given to hollow beings and shallow dreams. It may not always be a moral ending of content, but through the use of rhetoric devices, a message of value is liberated. The Great Gatsby, an American novel, presents Nick Carraway’s exquisite use of numerous rhetorical devices used to give meaning to Gatsby and the American Dream. Jay Gatsby is the hollow being with a shallow dream who represents the lower class in America taking advantage of social mobility only to realize one has nothing.
