Steinbeck used his real interactions and experience with migrant workers to help shape this part of his writing. The suffering of the migrant workers because of the landowners is used to demonstrate the darker side of humanity. Steinbeck shows how the landowners are the source of all the good and evil in the lives of the migrant workers. The landowners can give or take away a job, treat you decently or poorly, and pay you fairly or unfairly. Steinbeck use of religion in “The Grapes of Wrath” can be seen in Jim Casy’s initials “JC.” Many believe that this is an intentional usage and is referring to Jesus Christ. The story starts with an “original sin.” The original sin is the father lying to get the job in Washington. The story continues its retelling of the Cain and Abel story with the two brothers, Adam and Charles. When Adam receives favour over Charles, Charles brutally beats him. The original sin continues with Adam’s children, Aron and Cal. Aron becomes Abel and Cal becomes Cain. Thankfully, the cycle ends with Cal who gains forgiveness and a blessing, “timshel” or “thou mayest, from his father. Cal is realizes with this blessing that he can overcome evil, something he thought he was predestined to because of his mother 's sins.
