They traveled hundreds of miles in rough terrain to get to their dreamland. In the film the Okies are tough people that wont back down from a fight. You see many people end a dispute with a punch to the face. For example when they are at the transient camp a cop starts making trouble, accusing an Okie of being the troublemaker, when in fact the man was just trying to warn the other people about how he got scammed out of money and standing up for his rights.
