George Orwell was a political writer prominent in the post World War II era, who opposed the rise of totalitarian states. In the novel 1984, he created an imaginary society where the people are stripped of their humanity. The story takes place in a fictional country called Oceania, where the ruling Party and its leader, Big Brother, seek absolute power over its people. To achieve this, they apply physical and mental restrictions, surveillance, propaganda, and shame of language to gain control of the people 's minds. I know you wonder if our government is controlling to help us, or if they are controlling just to be in control. Orwell makes tons of claims that they just want to be in control. I agree with his claims. …show more content…
When he saw the “Big Brother” control of history in 1948, he decided to title the book 1984. He worked for the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), and the “Ministry of Truth is modeled to some extent on BBC” (Bennett). This shows you that the world today relates to the slogan. In fact, it’s safe to say that the book was written for us in the future to be aware of the past, or shall we say future. Like they say, who controls the past controls the future. Orwell wanted us to know that the “BBC put out false hate propaganda during World War II” (Bennett). This also goes to show you that we were changing the …show more content…
I will tell you how he was correct. Are you questioning how the government controls us today? First, we have technology. Mass media is brainwashing, like the telescreens in the novel are. For instance, we watch historical movies that are based off facts and fiction. In many cases, the movies cause a misleading view of history events. In the novel, everything that Goldstein taught during the Two Minutes Hate, was about “crimes against the Party, all treacheries, acts of sabotage, heresies, and deviations” (Orwell 14).We have even have a “Two Minutes Hate” (Orwell 12) in the world today. In history, we learn about all the wars and the bad that has gone on before. We Even though the war ended long ago, “hate sessions directed against Hitler and the Nazis are so pervasive that a visitor from Mars might think that World War II was still in progress” (Bennett). This is something that we constantly watch and study. I’m not stating that we should forget the past, but how much of the past is really true? When you think of memory holes, “Chairman Mao, once the Big Brother of China, has been virtually written out of Chinese history” (Bennett). We’re suppose to have so much freedom, and we’re suppose to be able to have privacy, in reality we don’t. The government passed a bill that would let over 22 different agencies read your emails, without permission. A family’s home was raided by the SWAT team, because
