“The Gift of the Magi” Literary Analysis
“The Gift of the Magi” written by O. Henry is a short story that explains, “the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other” (O. Henry p.9). The story takes place during Christmas and the couple, Della and Jim, struggle financially to buy gifts for each other. Readers are able to see that even though they live in a cheap and broken apartment they treasure their pure love and are willing to sacrifice everything they have.
The short story is set the day before Christmas and it also takes place in their apartment. Their apartment is described in bad conditions, “shabby little couch and howl” (O. Henry p.3), “worn red carpet” (O. Henry p.5), and “In the vestibule below was a letter-box into which no letter would go…” (O. Henry p.3). This demonstrates the situation Jim and Della are in. The setting affects both characters. Della and Jim do not have sufficient money to spend. They learned to value each other and they things they do have. “One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair” (O. Henry p.4). Another way the setting affects the character is that Della had to pay rent and bills in order to reside in the apartment. “Expenses had been greater that she had calculated” (O. Henry p.4).
