In the short story "A&P" by John Updike, the protagonist, Sammy, quits his job at the end of the story. It is clear that life will not be easy for him after this. Although it is never an appropriate idea to suddenly quit a job, Sammy’s boredom with his job, his disinclination for his manager, and his attempt to impress the girls he felt were wronged, are feasible reasons behind his ultimate decision to quit his job. Throughout the story, there are countless instances described that could lead to the conclusion that Sammy, the front-end cash register attendant at a grocery store named A&P, could be perhaps uninterested with his duties at work. Near the end of the story, when the manager was giving these girls a hard time, Sammy quit his job in hopes of trying to impress the girls. This might have had a colossal role on why Sammy ultimately quit his job. Sammy paid masses amount of attention to these girls as they walked throughout the store. He goes on in detail about how they look and what they are wearing. In paragraph three he says "there was this chunky one, with the two-piece-it was bright green and the seams at the bra were still sharp and her belly was still pretty pale so I guessed she just got it", There was one girl in particular that Sammy noticed the most. He nicknamed her Queenie. It was her he might have been trying to impress the most by quitting his job. When Queenie went to pay for her items, she took her money from out of her top piece and Sammy mentions that the jar he was holding went heavy on his hands. It sounds like he might have had a slight crush on Queenie. When Sammy quits, he says "I quit" to the manager who gave the girls a hard time so that the girls would hear him. Sammy said this in hopes that they would stop and pay attention to him, their unexpected hero. Then, when Sammy eventually walks out of the store he looks for the girls and refers to them as "his girls". It sounds like he fabricated a relationship with these girls in his
