The game of basketball would not be around today if it wasn’t for one man, his name was James Naismith. James was born on November 6, 1861 in Ontario, Canada. He was born to the parents of John and Margaret Naismith. When James was only nine years old both of his parents had died, leaving James an orphan. This was a very rough time in James’ life. After becoming an orphan, he was raised by his very strict grandmother for a little bit, and then his bachelor uncle. While growing up James enjoyed hunting, the outdoors, and most of all, he loved playing sports with other people. Growing up, James decided to drop out of high school even though he was a very smart person. After dropping out of high school he worked as a logger in a lumber camp for five years. Finally, he decided to go back to school in 1883. After he finished high school, he went to McGill University in Montreal, Canada. James Naismith eventually graduated from McGill University with a degree in theology (“James Naismith”).

There are lots of reasons why James Naismith became very involved with sports in his life, and it all started at a young age. When James was young he loved the outdoors and playing sports with friends. He was a very good athlete growing up and eventually took his athletic talents with him when he went to school at McGill University. During college he played football and lacrosse.
