In 1891 Dr. James Naismith created the game of basketball. He then became the first basketball coach at Kansas University. He was succeeded by many other great coaches, such as Phog Allen, Adolph Rupp, and Roy Williams. Despite these legends coming through the program Bill Self may be the best coach in Kansas’ long and rich history. On and off the court, Bill Self has had a profoundly positive impact on those around him and he has the awards to prove it.

2 seed three times, and a No. 3 seed once. In other words, since 2006, Self’s Jayhawks have not received a tournament seed less than a 3 in nearly a decade. All but two of those years they reached the Sweet 16, and in 5 of the seasons they reached the Elite Eight. Kansas, however, is not the only team Self has had tourney success with. Bill is one of six coaches to take 3 different teams to the Elite 8. These being Tulsa in 2000, Illinois in 2001, and Kansas in 2004, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2016. With Kansas Self has reached the Elite Eight on nearly 50 percent of his Seasons. Furthermore, Bill’s Kansas team has never not received an NCAA tournament berth.
Although, Coach Self has had incredible success on the court, his off court behavior is even more profound. In June of 2006 Bill and his wife, Cindy, established the Assists Foundation. Assists Foundation is a 501© (3) organization. That means its a non profit, tax exempt, charity foundation. It serves as a fundraising conduit for organizations that serve a variety of youth initiations. In other words, The Assists foundation helps raise money for foundations like KVC Health Systems (Behavioral Healthcare), Children’s Mercy-Family Health.
