Robin Benway, in her novel, Emmy and Oliver, uses metaphors, personification, and hyperbole to expand on the dramatic plot of her book. This would cause readers to really feel a connection of grief to the main character, Emmy, and her friends, due to the situation they were going through of losing their friend for so many years. Benway expands on the shocking fact of Oliver coming back from being kidnapped by his dad for many years by using metaphors quite often. “Preserved in amber,” “A fossil in a brave new world,” compares Oliver’s new life to that of a fossil. The poem “For That He Looked Not upon Her” by sixteenth-century English poet George Gascoigne explores this idea through illustrating the reasoning of why a man cannot look into the eyes of the women he once loved anymore. In “The Flea,” John Donne uses a metaphysical conceit through the imagery of a flea to portray sexual desires and romance. In the very first line of the poem, the speaker brings up the flea by telling the woman to “Mark but this flea,” which makes it sound like he wants the woman to only pay attention to the flea and nothing else (line 1). In the third line, the imagery the flea is further expanded upon when the speaker begins making the flea sound like a sexual object, such as when he says, “It sucked me first, and now sucks thee / And in this flea our two bloods mingled be” (lines 3-4). 'Compare the methods used by the poets to explore guilt in Giuseppe and The Deliverer' Both Giuseppe and The Deliverer focus on past events. Giuseppe intertwines historical events with a fantasy character – the "mermaid" - in order to hide some of the guilt the speaker's uncle feels over his part in the events the poem relays.
