Metaphors In The Bible

Decent Essays
Deuteronomy 32:4 says “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.” Metaphors about God and Jesus abound in The Bible. God is commonly referred to as a rock, as in this example.
In each of these examples, figurative language and descriptions are used in order to make comparisons between different things easier to understand. Since each of these verses are commonly quoted and alluded to, the metaphors used are important to understand. So, not only are these metaphors integral in The Bible, but show up in many other texts.
It is a blessing and a curse to not know exactly what or how God is, we yearn for knowledge because living in the unknown is terrifying for us

“The Posionwood Bible”, written by Barbara Kingsolver, is a tale of the Price family’s mission trip to spread the word of God in a primitive town called Kilanga within the Belgian Congo. Although the book is about the whole family’s experience, each chapter includes many narrations from different narrators, also known as a multi-voiced narrative. The multi-voiced narrative allows for the reader to view the story through different members of the family, and this reveals previously hidden aspects of the story. Nathan Price, the minister, spearheads the trip, but his narration is not included. The family members within the book who do share their stories are Rachel, Leah, Adah, Ruth May, and their mother Orleanna Price.…

Donaghy once explains about the function of metaphors in his book. According to him the functions of metaphors are connotative and aesthetic. From the connotative function, translation refers to the ability to translate metaphor. To describe concrete and abstract concepts to be more detail, express what inside thoughts and characterize the quality of the described object. From the aesthetic function, it refers to the ability of a metaphor to provide the aesthetic impact on the reader, to interest and surprise the reader (Donaghy 2014:…

Biblical Allusions “Viva La Vida” alludes to a parable given by Jesus about a fool who built his house on sand and a man who built his house on rock. The song says “And I discovered that my castles stand. Upon pillars of salt, pillars of sand” because in the Bible the fool did not listen to Jesus and built his house on sand and it fell when rain came unlike the man’s house built on rock (salt). Pillars of salt is also a reference to Genesis 19:26, in which Lot’s wife was told if she looked back she would be turned into a pillar of salt, which she did and was, as promised, turned into a pillar of salt.…

First, I chose this quotation because it helps establish Eliezer’s spiritual standings that will be represented throughout the book. To explain, this quotation is important because it allows Eliezer to find the answer to the original question that appeared earlier “Why do you pray?”. Throughout the book, Eliezer is angry and questions why God has placed him on this disagreeable path. In addition to having this quotation, it gives Eliezer the opportunity to find the answers to his questions within his soul until it is his time to meet God and find out all of the true answers. Although, there are many symbols in this book, this is one of the most significant symbols.…

Life would be so much easier if the truth was black and white, but in reality, the truth is more of a grey area. In the play Doubt: A Parable, Father Flynn’s innocence is unsure to both the readers and the characters in the play. Although there doesn’t seem to be enough evidence to prove he is guilty, Sister Aloysius is “armed with her certainty” and gets Father Flynn to leave the school (Shanley . The lack of physical evidence makes Sister Aloysius attempts to expose Father Flynn fruitless, but upon further inspection of the play, there are subtle hints that reveal the truth. Because of the symbolism that John Patrick Shanley uses, Father Flynn’s resignation at the end of the play, his relationship with Donald Muller, and wanting to be friendlier to the other male students, Father Flynn is shown to be guilty of molesting Donald Muller.…

They can occur in a series or in an extended form. The exegete must be careful not to “over-interpret” similes and metaphors, i.e. not to put a modern day spin on them which could never have been intended by the original author. Again, all interpretation must consider context, not only in the immediate discourse but also in the canon of Scripture. (Klein, Blomberg, 2004; Travers,…

When discussing the divine nature of Allah versus the divine nature of God, the nature of God triumphs over the nature of Allah. In order for Allah’s nature to escalate to the level of divinity, it must compare itself to the natures of all other gods. James Sire, the author of The Universe Next Door, notes how, “Allah’s greatness is understood by way of contrast to all other inferior beings” (2009, pg. 248). God’s nature, though, does not depend upon other gods because he is the only God. God, who is above all other fictional gods, imprints his very nature upon his creation and upon the very hearts of humanity.…

There is a good reason God admonishes us not to judge anyone. We simply do not have all the information needed nor will we ever know all that should be known to judge another person or even ourselves. Only God has all the information and that is why He is the just Judge (Psalm 7:11). We only prophesy is part (1 Corinthians 13:9), so God doesn’t tell us everything, just what we need to know. The Bible tells us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways…
