The Holocaust refers to a genocide by the Nazis starting in 1941 and finally ending in 1945. Over six million Jews are sent to concentration camps where they are either forced to work hard days with little food until they died or face death in various ways such as being shot or put in the gas chambers. Hitler came to power in 1933, Germany faces an economic depression and responsibility for World War I. Factors such as these allowed Hitler to ultimately gain power and target the Jews as the ones responsible for all of Germany’s issues. This came as no surprise since Hitler publically voices his hatred towards the Jews. Hitler slowly made life more uncomfortable for the Jew’s as his reign progressed. As Rudolf Hoess states in his testimony at the Nuremburg Trials, “The "final solution" of the Jewish question meant the complete extermination of all Jews in Europe. Other concentration camps were around since 1934, such as Belzek and Treblinka, these camps acted as labor camps rather than ones meant for extermination. Prior to Hitler’s rise there was no evidence of state advocated Jewish discrimination, racism or any law’s limiting their rights. The Holocaust was not pre-planned, but rather was an opportunity that grew out of Jewish resentment and fanatic nationalism guided by Hitler. The Nazis envision a pure country for just the German people, but over time their vision became twisted and ruthless.
