All over the world young kids, teens, adults and elderly people suffer from depression. In 2012, it was estimated that 121 million people all across the globe suffered from a form of depression and that it affected 1 in every 10 Americans (Unhappiness). Studies, experiments, and observations have shown and proved that regularly being alone can lead to depression or other psychological disorders. The different definitions of the word “alone” help determine how it is being used or the feelings behind it. The two sides or aspects to the word have both negative and positive meanings. Depending on who is describing it, the explanations can vary.
Defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus “alone” is an adjective meaning “1) without anyone or anything else, 2) feeling unhappy because of being separated from other people, and 3) without people that you know or that usually are with you”. When first hearing the word, some relate it with negative characteristics and it being a burden. On the other hand, being alone for another person could be a blessing. The various definitions mean something different to all people, no matter age, gender or ethnicity. It all depends on one’s life and their emotions. The positive aspects of being alone are mostly all the same for most optimistic people.
