Being alone can lead to social/interaction issues and can also lead to depression, in which can cause other serious conditions such as eating disorders, self-harm, and suicide. Long periods of being alone has been linked to social awkwardness, antisocial behavior, and a complete lack of social skills. A famous, more extreme case of being alone came about in 1970, when the story of Genie, a 13 year old feral child living in California was found in her home, completely unable to speak, eat and perform mental, physical and emotional tasks that all humans do daily. Her inability to carry out such tasks were the result of severe abuse from her father and isolation from the rest of her family and the outside world. She spent 13 years of her life, from when she was born to being a teenager, being alone in her dark, ten square foot bedroom. When she was found, she had the mental capacity of that of a 13 month old baby, and she did not talk, only harm herself and make quiet noises. Sociologists and psychologists worked to help catch her brain and body back up to her actual age and the progress gradually began to increase (Sterbenz).
