“Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty”, says social activist Mother Teresa. The effects of isolation strike many as unimportant, but in truth, isolation can be the deciding factor of your very life. Isolation isn’t just a one time thing; it affects your entire life. Mother Teresa suggests that isolation is the worst type of poverty and she is right. Our current society develops the thought that everyone has isolation and that the effects are painless, but that is far from the truth. In reality, isolation is one of the biggest mental health issues for teens around the world. Isolation causes negativity, kills your ambition, and shatters your relationships.

Broken relationships with friends and family can cause a teenager to feel abandoned and secluded by those around him/her which is exactly what happened to Jacinda, the protagonist of the novel, How To Tell Renata. Jacinda's mother, Renata, had recently gotten married to her boyfriend Jerry. Jacinda feels uncomfortable around Jerry because she feels that he has been sexually harassing her and does not feel comfortable telling this to her mother. Jacinda says, “Renata is my mother - though I’ve never called her anything but Renata for as long as I can remember” (Holeman 120). Through this quote, the writer implies that Jacinda and Renata have a broken relationship. The fact that Jacinda does not feel close enough to call Renata “mom” shows that their relationship is very weak and that Jacinda does not have anyone to talk to and deals with her problems by herself. The broken mother-daughter relationship that Jacinda experiences is why Jacinda does not talk to her mother and tends to live in isolation. In this example, Jacinda is experiencing physical and emotional harm from Jerry due to the negative relationship she experiences with her mother. Jacinda tends to deal with her problems by herself which results in sexual abuse and emotional harm. Jacinda represents what many teenagers face today.
