He first states how “…advances in medicine and agriculture…” have saved more lives than those that have been lost in the wars (Sagan 11). Also he provides facts to prove his credibility for his assertions. He uses, on page 12, quotes from a poem and a book as an example to show how ignorance is also observed in the government. In his example he states that society prefers to not know how corruption happens even though it is obvious that it is there. He then proceeds to talk about a controversial issue, evolution. By giving examples of how earth is one planet in a billion that had ancestors go back to ape ties, he then proceeds to state how the “superstitions and pseudoscience keep getting in the in the way…” and seem to provide the wrong answers for strange things happening in the world instead of using facts (Sagan 13). Sagan states how the use of media helps the development of pseudoscience which he does not agree with. He gives excellent examples and explanations for the way of thinking of people in the society which he believed are scientifically illiterate.
