I examined the smoke coming from the engine of my dumb car that sat stationary on the side of the quiet road. The engine was making abnormal noises, and I backed away quickly. The dark smoke kept rising as I made my way to the passenger seat to get my phone to call for help. My uncle, who was a sheriff, had taken a look under the hood this morning as he was driving in to have breakfast with my father and lock up the house after he left. Clearly no progress had been made as the problem only got worse and I was stuck in the middle of two spacious fields of corn.
I finally got ahold of it and noticed it wasn’t turning on and came to the conclusion that it was dead. Just my luck.
I grabbed my backpack and threw it over my shoulder as I started walking towards the end of the trail. My house wasn’t too far from here, and it was still a bright afternoon, so I didn’t think my dad would get worried. I passed a bus stop where there were more people than usual and everyone seemed to be talking on their phones.
I made it home in one piece and encountered my dog asleep on the patio. I unlocked the door and threw my backpack onto the nearby couch. I was about to sit down when I remembered
I forgot to lock my car. I contemplated going back since it was only about a twenty­minute walk but I decided against it since it was only a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta. I had nothing of value in it anyway, besides vanilla scented air freshener.
I went into the kitchen and got some cereal as I charged my phone…
