Did you know that Mexico’s history dates all the way back to 5000 B.C.? At that time, Mexicans had barely mastered fire and the art of chipping flints for stone weapons. Over 7,000 years have passed and Mexico has endured a lengthy history of being settled in and conquered by many different groups of people from the Aztecs to the Maya to the Spaniards to the French to today’s Mexicans and other indigenous groups. Mexicans have come a long way from mastering fire to creating an entire culture. Mexico not only has a fascinating history, but also has very interesting cultural aspects including holidays, religion, the sport of football, food, and music.
To begin, prior to the country even being called Mexico, the country experienced a lengthy history. Throughout many centuries, Mexico was settled by native Mexican civilizations like, “the Olmec, Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec, Toltecs, and Aztecs” (“History of Mexico”). During the early 1500s, Spaniards arrived in Mexico three different times until Hernando Cortés conquered the country and the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán, fell to Spaniards in 1521. For 300 years, Mexico, known at the time as New Spain, was a Spaniard colony. Finally, in 1810, the Mexican independence movement began. They finally won their independence from Spain in 1821, making them the largest nation in North America. This was the case until the Mexican-American war, which took place from 1846 to 1848 and caused Mexico to lose half its territory to the United States.…
