This paper covers the topic of gendering in North American culture. Americans have gendered everything ranging from personality traits to colors. This is an issue because it creates stereotypes, can cost women extra money, and limits self-expression. Three arguments are given as to why nothing should be gendered.
Nothing Should Be Gendered Gendering nearly everything has become a great issue in North American culture. The gendering happens when personality traits, products, colors, and clothing are labeled for either men or women. Nothing should be gendered because it causes people to feel twofold caged (Lisa Wade).
Argument 1
The only major difference between men and women is physicality. Men and women go to school together, grow up together, get jobs together, and live very similar lives. Gendering personality traits has been happening for centuries. In the United States, men are often associated with being aggressive, analytical, and dominant while women are associated with being nurturing, emotional, and compliant (Stokes).
Gendering personality traits starts at birth, and occurs through three major agents of socialization: family, peer groups, and mass media. When parents raise a child, oftentimes, behavioral punishments vary depending on the child’s gender.
