Gender Roles In The Hunger Games By Katniss And Peeta

Today in society, certain genders are seen as particular archetypes. Household work and job opportunities have been seen better for certain genders based on how those genders are expected to act. However, that idea has drastically changed in fictional movies and novels. In the movie The Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta have opposite gender roles.
“Females have been characterized passive, warm, and caring.”(Gore) An example is in housework. “The work of knitting and sewing may be better suited by women, who generally exhibit better fine motor skills.” (Household Work) Another example is in career fields. “Conversely, while many men have excelled as primary school educators, these teaching positions continue to be held largely by women.” (Household

Men are portrayed as assertive, aggressive, independent, competent, and logical. For example, in a household, “The heavy work of plowing or bailing hay tends to be accomplished more easily by men, due to their larger muscle mass.” (Household Work) That is an example of how men are expected to be strong. Another example is in job occupations. “Certain occupations have been considered appropriate for men, while other work was reserved primarily for women.”(Household Work) When applying for jobs, certain jobs seem to be best for a particular gender. When society thinks about police officers, mayors, or a doctors, many think of men occupying those jobs. In the 2008 movie The Hunger Games, Katniss Evergreen and Peeta Mellark’s gender archetypes or “gender roles’ are flip flopped. Katniss is more aggressive and independent. Katniss is good at hunting and shooting a bow and arrow. She takes the place of her late father. Her father passing away forces her to take on the responsibilities of providing for her family because Katniss’ mother could not. On the other hand, Peeta Mellark is more gentle and caring.
