Ethics is a topic that every nurse comes in contact with on a daily basis. It determines how nurses carry out the duties of the job and how the public perceives the profession as a whole. The College of Nurses of Ontario (further referred to as CNO) has outlined the ethical standard of nursing and has created a document that all nurses can rely on to build the foundation of their ethics in the workplace. Ethics in nursing has developed and changed over the course of the existence of nursing. This evolution is important to note as it highlights how the ethics in nursing developed from physician oriented to patient oriented and how different views may be held by the patients for the role of a nurse in their healthcare.…
The Purpose of the Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct for Nursing Student is an article written by Susan Stone, who is a nursing advocate, a nursing educator, and advisor for the NSNA Leadership University at Valencia Community College's Student Nurses Association. Her article includes her views on the importance and purpose of the NSNA Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. The article talks about how when we were children, our parents helped us to develop our values and beliefs, they gave us guidelines that directed our behavior. Many of us had these positive actions reinforced in religious, educational, and social environments like while interacting with friends. Moreover, when we were kids, our parents taught us that if we did something…
Ana Code of Ethics The American Nurses Association is known as a very important organization; it defines nurses as being the most important option in order to resolve or improve health problems for a patient (ANA, 2011). Also to diagnose, provide recuperative care, as well as being capable of educating patients, in addition to applying and performing care treatment always under the supervision of a doctor. American Nurses Association (ANA) is basically in charge of maintaining the ANA Nurses Code of Ethics as well as the human rights according to (ANA, 2011). Introduction The role of a nurse has been changeable at best and its route into professionalism has been fraught with an arduous struggle to improve education and standards. When considering these standards it is important to examine the differences between regulatory and professional nursing agencies, to understand the code of ethics that guide nursing practice and to be able to effect the professional traits from this code of ethics into practice. During the evolution of nursing, various theories have developed.…
In my view, nursing entails giving quality care to patients while concurrently adhering with codes of conducts that are affiliated with the profession. The core values of nursing define the driving force that dictates my values and behaviors. These core values include honesty, responsibility, equality of all patients, the pursuit of new knowledge, the desire to prevent and alleviate suffering and the belief in human dignity. Nurses discharge their responsibilities and make their ethical decisions based on the framework of the ANA 2014 code of ethics. The main principles surrounding the ANA code of ethics can be categorized into, • Confidentiality, this is the protection of clients’ privileged information • Fidelity, exercising the protection…
Respect for patient autonomy In 1979, Beauchamp and Childress first put forward the four principles approach to biomedical ethics. They outlined how in order to act as a professional nurse and in the best interests of individual patients, the principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice must be upheld (Beauchamp and Childress, 2013). Autonomy has been given a number of general meanings e.g. freedoms of choice, self-governance, privacy, free-will (Beauchamp and Childress, 2002). However, in the context of healthcare, a patients’ decision is regarded as autonomous if they have the mental capacity to make the current decision- to either consent of refuse, have all of the relevant information to make the decision, and do so…
Abortion and Nurse Autonomy Abortion is an ethical dilemma many nurses have faced or will face during their career. A nurse may have internal conflicts when assigned to care for a patient who is having or has had an abortion, such as religious beliefs, personal beliefs, which may impede on their level of care of the patient. The nurse must practice the principle of autonomy, or self-driven determination. In the article “A Reflective Study on Abortions in Theatre,” a scrub nurse tells of how they faced the conflict of personal and religious beliefs, lack of communication between staff members, and their reflection on the situation. This article is an example of how ethical dilemmas need to be faced with autonomy so in the end, the patient will not be harmed and be given the best care, abiding by standards of care, and policies set in place to protect the nurse and the patient.…
Based on Christian worldview, human beings are created in the image God. They are intelligent and responsible for their action. God is able to see whatever human beings do. All human beings’ actions will affect their life after death. They need to act right to be able to have a life with God and his people.…
For the En to understand this code of ethics she must protect, promote and optimise health for all in her care. Prevent illness or injury and advocate on patients behalf. To carry out these ethics the nurse must carry out her duties with knowledge, proper skill set and an understanding of policy and procedures. With the EN not following medication safe administration and distribution she is not valuing patient safety and the risks associated with this…
Nurses encounter a serious amount of ethical problems when providing patient care that can lead to ethics–related stress. Ethical-related stress is an occupational stress that is emotional, physical, and psychological consequences of moral distress (Ulrich, et al., 2007). It is a general assumption that nurse leaders should provide ethical training to other staff in need by demonstrating the ethical practice and providing ethical support as well. Even when frontline nurses assume the role of leaders to enhance ethical practices, their actions to build a moral community amongst nurses cannot be sustained if they are unsupported by their formal nurse managers (Storch, Makaroff, Pauly, & Newton, 2013).…
The author of this paper has learned the importance of both legal and ethical issues being in the practical nursing program. Before starting the program the author had no idea about either of these issues. The author has learned that it is vital for all nurses to be familiar with nursing law and ethics and understand how nursing legal issues can affect them. Nurses should know the basic nursing laws and know how to avoid lawsuits and liability issues. Ethics honors standards of moral judgment and professional conduct.…
Nursing is an ethical activity (Ellis, 2017). He explained that the principles and theories of ethics are one of the methods used to make a clinical decision. According to Singapore Nursing Board Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (1999), nurses are expected to advocate in the best interest of the patients. Nurses engage in daily activities with the intention of the right practices however, there are times where nurses are put in a dilemma where their ethics come into question (Ellis, 2017). Patient A, aged 70, was brought into the emergency department of hospital Z with complains of generalised pain and functional decline with increasing altered mental state.…
Thank you for speaking out on behalf of the special needs children and their families. Vulnerable and marginalized groups in societies are often less likely to enjoy the right to health. As per the code of ethic for Nurses, the profession is represented by associations and their member. we as nurses are responsible of articulating the nursing values, for maintaining the integrity of the profession and its practice and for shaping social policy (ANA, 2017). Therefore, we must continue to advocate and strive to protect the health, safety and right of our patients and our love ones.…

It is true that many new nursing students perceive that understanding and studying the nursing code of ethics is of great importance, and that the code of ethics is something more than just common sense, that needs to be carefully cultivated under an instructors or superiors supervision. However, they do not feel satisfactorily equipped to deal with ethical problems in daily practice. It takes multiple teaching strategies to ensure that nursing students can understand and implement the code of ethics thoroughly. Although using the code of ethics in the nursing process is not always straightforward, and is a task that demands study and practice, nurses are expected to abide by high standards and to understand what is anticipated of them. The…
